Saint Mary’s Hall has had a Robotics & Engineering Club since 2003. Even though we have had our successes and failures, one thing remained constant every year: when the experienced seniors, the key to our success, graduated, a talent vacuum was left behind. It was considered their honor and theirs alone to do the fun stuff – building and driving the robot. Thus, in order to solve this problem, we encouraged the freshman and new members to be involved in the different aspects of the robot and its construction. We held tool workshops and discussed and demonstrated the purpose of each power tool, describing the stages of building a robot as we went along. We reached out to diversify our membership and harness the school’s rich pool of talent. Dancers, writers, musicians, computer designers, future architects, and engineers – all were crucial in fostering ideas and promoting community growth. Ultimately, we were able to accomplish two equally important items: first, we recruited students that were passionate and curious about robotics, which resulted in a wider awareness and interest in engineering. Second, we had six great weeks where we shared our thoughts, ideas, and strategies. Along the way, we became good friends and we formed strong bonds and relationships from the hours we spent together each weekend. Thus, our true victory will be creating and leaving a legacy of knowledge and experience for all current and future members of the Saint Mary’s Hall Robotics & Engineering Club.
